Blog Tour: The Childless Ones

Welcome to the book tour for “The Childless Ones,” the debut novel of Cam Rhys Lay! “The Childless Ones” will be released November 12, but you can preorder your copy now on Amazon and Barnes & Noble.

Book description:
TWO WORLDS...TWO ALTERNATING NARRATIVES...A REALIST RELATIONSHIP DRAMA...AN EPIC FANTASY...

In the "real world," we open with Jack Ampong just leaving a prostitute when he receives a phone call that his wife Sarah has been assaulted. With this incident as a jumping off point, we watch as Jack and Sarah deal with past guilt and regrets as well as their own ongoing struggles with relationships, infertility and parenthood.

In the "fantasy world"—ostensibly written by Jack—a bureaucratic Empire rules with an iron fist...an ancient sect of sorcerers have extraordinary powers but are cursed with the inability to have children... and a race of beings called the Mandrakar live lives one quarter the length of normal people, but have memories that are passed on to future generations through the last of an ancient breed of tree. Along the way, we meet a crotchety governor who just wants to do right by his granddaughter, a hardboiled, lesbian, dwarf detective who just wants another drink, and a villainous sorcerer whose motives form one of the central mysteries of the story.

Throughout the book, the two narratives echo off one another—often in surprising ways—ultimately commenting on the very nature of storytelling itself.

Praise:
"impressively creates two vivid worlds, each with its own history and compelling characters, while also offering a meditation on the relationship between creativity, fertility, and shared memory. A stunning fantasy debut." -- Kirkus Reviews

Neve Colvin isn’t good enough. As an introvert, her life is a never-ending list of labels and criticism. Pressures to change come from everyone—including the one person she thought would love her unconditionally … her mother. All Neve wants is acceptance, but surrounded by extroverts it’s a wish that’s nearly impossible to fulfil.

For Neve there’s only one solution: anyone disapproving must go. Even if it means only one person will remain.

That person is her lifelong friend Blake Reynolds. He’s seen the fights with her mum, the breakdowns caused by attacks on her personality, and the battles for acceptance. Each time she is left shattered and questioning who she is, he’s the one to collect the pieces of her broken heart. Shielding her from the cruelty is his only concern. But how can he protect her when Neve is concealing a secret so dark?

Blake thinks he knows everything about her, and with their relationship developing, he assumes Neve trusts him fully. However, there is one memory Neve is too ashamed of to share. Revealing it will test Blake’s loyalty beyond what she could ever ask, and Blake is the only friend she can’t afford to lose. He’s the one person capable of dragging her from the darkness plaguing her, but with pressures to conform increasing, even Blake may not be enough to pull her back this time.

Excerpt

“What are you doing?” I manage to get out around my laughs. She tenses at my words and then tilts her head back to fix me with a glare, her eyes blazing with irritation.
“I’m sleeping in the bath like I said I would. Why, what did you think I was doing? Teaching myself to swim?”
“I know what you’re doing. I think that’s obvious. What I meant was why are you doing this?” I step into the room and move in front of her so she doesn’t have to crane her neck to see me.
“You know why.”
“You’re not sleeping in here, Stripes.”
“Watch me.”
I cross my arms. There’s no way I’m going back to bed and allowing her to sleep in a bath. The only problem is that it’s hard to maintain a frustrated expression when everything about the situation is so damn funny. “Be back in a second.”
She mumbles something that sounds like “I’m not going anywhere” to my back as I rush out of the bathroom. Rummaging in my drawer, I find what I’m looking for then I’m back in the room with Neve in seconds.
Before she can react, I have a camera in front of me.
“Smile,” I tease, only it causes her glower to darken. Three lines appear on her forehead as her face screws up.
“Delete that now.”
“Nope. Get out of the bath and I might let you.”
“I’m not getting out. I told you I’m sleeping here.”
“Why all the drama? We’ve slept in the same bed for ages now. It’s not a big deal.” She rolls over, showing me her back, and ignores me. “Stripes, get out of the bath.”
“Night, Blake.”
If she thinks I’m going to give up that easy, she’s got another surprise coming. She should know by now that I don’t give up and people don’t say no to me. I put the camera on the counter by the sink, needing both of my hands.
Carefully, so as not to reveal my intentions, I lean over the bath and line up my hands. With one swift motion, I grip her tightly, heaving her out of the tub and throwing her over my shoulder as she screams, “Put me down, Blake!”
“I told you, you’re not sleeping in a bath. Now shut up and stop hitting my back.” My light and jovial words only serve to make her flail around even more. I manage to pin her legs, but I’m powerless to do anything to stop her hands pounding against my back. It’s not enough to hurt, that’s not her intention, but the squirming is becoming increasingly frustrating.
When I reach the bed, I drag her back over my shoulder and dump her on the mattress. She bounces, not able to hide the laughter on her face while she stares at me and hiccups. This is how I like to see her, carefree and happy. It’s rare nowadays that I catch a glimpse of Neve when she’s truly happy, but in this moment there isn’t a strained muscle in her body. It’s natural, and I can’t stop myself from watching her. I’m still amazed that I’m the one who can bring out her joy and it baffles me that she’s allowed herself to be mine.
We remain gazing at each other with ridiculous grins for a minute. When I’m sure she isn’t going to run, I move around to my of the bed side. Her head follows me, and when I go to climb in beside her, she rolls over. She throws her arms and legs out wide, taking up the entire mattress.
You’re in the bath then.” She points at the door with the hand furthest away from me, a devilish twinkle in her eyes. It takes me a while to respond. The sight of her body stretched out in her skimpy pyjamas makes my throat dry, and I have to consciously remind myself to swallow. My gaze focuses on her pale skin, which is exposed by her shirt riding up and the top of her shorts lowering as a result of her actions.
“I don’t think so.” My voice comes out more breathless than I expect as I watch her spread out in front of me.
“Well, you’re not sleeping in here with me.”
“My bed, my rules.” I place one knee on the mattress and climb on. My arms support most of my weight so my body is directly above hers. “So, I can either sleep on the left … or on top of you.” My voice drops into a murmur and she gulps, her lips parting as I hover over her. “Take your pick, Stripes.”

Chapter 5

Rick
I’d never met anyone like Jessica!  We seemed to hit if off from that first day we met despite my inability to communicate with her that morning and while Kevin kept me busy hanging out with the guys, every spare moment I had I found myself wanting to text or talk to her.  It was mind blowing when she leaned in to kiss me at Kevin’s party. I would’ve never had the balls to make the first move with her; she was just so far out of my league.
I couldn’t help but think this over and over in the days following. Not only did she kiss me, it turned into a full make out sessions. It was all over school, she was the ‘it’ girl, the all the guys wanted her and she’d picked me. Not even Kevin could kill my good mood.
Several days after the party, I came home to my dad pacing in the front room. I didn’t like him home so early.  But I didn’t spare him much thought because I was thinking of Jessica.  I was remembering how she had tasted sweet and how as I kissed her in Kevin’s basement, everyone had been watching.  She even let me go up her shirt a little before she stopped me. It was the furthest I’d ever gone.  I thought I might be in love with her.
“What is this?” My dad’s voice ripped into my daydreams.  I looked at him for a split second before wandering to the guitar case sitting in the middle of the room.  I bit down on my lip, not trusting myself to keep my mouth shut.  “I found this in your closet.”
I wanted to ask what he was doing in my room but simply stared at him.  My instincts told me not to push him.
“We went through all this in California.  You’re not to play this. Get rid of it.”
“No.” I took a deep breath. “I’m not playing anymore, but I’m not getting rid of it.”
“It’s a distraction. I won’t have you out there wasting time and money on some childish dream to be a rock star. If you won’t get rid of it, I will.” As he reached for it, I lunged and grabbed it.
“It reminds me of him.” I said without thinking.
“Of who? Of him?  Oh no, he had nothing to do with this.”
“Yeah he did. He believed in me. I don’t care what you say, Jason loved me, he gave this to me and it’s all I have left of him.”
“I told you never to say his name to me.” I ignored him, wanting to hurt him like I was hurting.
“He always helped me hide it from you. I may not play now, but one day I will and I won’t let you take that from me.”
“What do you mean he helped you?”
“I mean he helped me get to guitar lessons and he hid my guitar in his room.”
“Liar, he did not. Stop talking about him that way.”
“Jason loved me and supported me and he lied to you to protect me.”
“He’d never lie to me.” He screamed at me.
“It was all his idea to keep it hidden from you. Yeah, you’re poster child of a son came up with the idea to lie to you to help me. He chose me over you.”
“The hell he did!” he yelled.
“He loved me…”
“You just don’t get it do you?” He screamed at me. “I should’ve been you!”  He took several steps towards me. Panic screamed at me to run but he was too quick. The back of his fist slammed against my face and I stumbled and fell into the Christmas tree. Pain started to spiral from the spot he connected with, my vision swirled as the tree crashed to the floor. I wondered why I had even put the stupid thing up. I tried to scramble away from him but got tangled in the tree limbs and lights. I felt the glass of an ornament slice and burn into my hand as I crushed it into the carpet.  My stomach tightened in knots as he reached for me and yanked me to a standing position, instantly ripping me from the prison of the tree.
I struggled to get away from him. I somehow managed to fight my way out of his grasp and ran towards the stairs.  I made it half way up before he caught up to me and I felt the carpet burn my knees as we crashed to the floor.  I was able to kick free and half crawled half ran the rest of the way to my room. He was right behind me and pushed me just as I tried to shut the door. His fists were flying at my face as I slammed sideways into the door, arching my back from the pain. I saw blood and a tooth fly from my mouth and was fixated as it landed. I lost my focus when his knuckles caught under my chin, cranking my neck backwards.
I landed hard on my back and rolled over to my side, curling into a ball and covering my face as he slammed his dress shoe into my stomach. I watched as the tiny white scuffmarks flew towards my face. Then I felt his foot crack something in my body from behind and I wondered briefly how I’d ended up facing the other direction.  At one point, I caught a glimpse of his face and couldn’t quite understand why he had tears falling wildly from his eyes. I thought I’d see anger or hate, but devastation just didn’t fit with the pain my body was feeling at his hands.
He took several steps back when he saw me looking at him and then turned and ran from my room. I heard him leave the house and stared blankly at the door he’d run out of.   The world spun around me.  I could taste the blood running from my nose into my mouth.  I tried to focus my eyes but everything was so blurry from my tears and it made me sick to try.  I wondered when I’d started crying. I heard something behind me and braced myself for another assault.
“Saint Ricky?” I heard a familiar voice. “What happened?” It was Kevin.  This was so not what I needed, I thought. “I came to tell you… I mean I forgot…I came in your window to tell you….fuck” He trailed off. I’d never heard him clamor for words before.
“Go away.” I forced out in a breath, realizing at once that I had broken ribs. I didn’t know how to explain things to him.  I flinched as he placed a hand on my shoulder.
“Don’t move.” He commanded. Not threatening, but still Kevin. I heard him leave my room quietly. He returned moments later. “Now come here.” He said kneeling down next to me. I wanted to crawl under my bed and hide from him, from my dad. But his voice was almost hypnotic to me and I found myself obeying his calm commands. I attempted to sit up and cried out before I could stop myself.  Slowly he took my arm and wrapped it around his neck. He waited for a second to let me get use to the position then said, “Now try” and I did.
I took a deep breath and braced myself for the pain as I used his body to lean against. I gritted my teeth and slowly pulled myself into a sitting position. I leaned back against my bed, refusing to look at him.  He reached up with a warm damp towel and started to wipe blood from my face.  He put a bag of ice against the right side of my cheek. He wasn’t overly gentle or tender, almost like a doctor just doing what needed to be done.
“Here, hold this here.” He commanded. I reached up and pressed the cold bag against my face, my fingers instantly chilling at its touch.  He finished cleaning up the blood then got me a clean shirt.  “Put this one on.”  I looked down at my t-shirt and saw that it was covered in blood.  I stared at it, blinking, confused by the different shades of red. He stood back and waited patiently. “You need to change.” I looked up at him and he nodded slightly. With every breath and every move my ribs caught fire.  My face felt like a balloon. Finally, he sat next to me on the floor.
“You going to tell me what happened?”
What was I supposed to say to him? My dad hates me and freaked out on me because he wants me dead instead of my older brother.
“Your dad did this.” It wasn’t a question.  “I saw him storm out of here.” I couldn’t find the words to admit to him what had happened. “How long’s he been doing this to you?” He asked with a cutting edge.  When I didn’t answer he said more forcefully, “How long?”
“This is the first time.”
“Really?” He looked at me skeptically. He must have seen something in my face to make him believe me. “What set him off?”
“It’s a long story.”
“I have time.”
“Not now.”
I expected him to push again but he didn’t ask any more questions. I got lost in the shock of what had happened. I ran through it over and over, wondering what I’d done wrong.  If I’d only kept my mouth shut.  I always had to learn things the hard way. I wondered what would happen when he came home.
Finally he asked, “You okay to be alone tonight?” I looked at the clock and realized he’d been sitting with me for over two hours without saying a word.
I thought about it, “Yeah, I’m fine.”
“Call me if he comes after you again.” He walked to the window. “I’m serious, if you need something call me!” He was harsh but I knew if I had to, I could call him.
“I will.” I said hesitantly.
“Wear a long sleeve shirt tomorrow to hide the bruises.” Again, with the commands. “You can’t hide what’s on your face, tell people we got in a fight tonight with some guys. I’ll back the story up.”
“But you don’t have any bruises.” I said feeling embarrassed. It would look like I got a total beat down in a fight and he didn’t.
“Don’t worry about it, just do it. K?”
“Fine.” I said, still not liking the idea but thought it was better than telling people my dad did it.
“Night, Rick.” It was the first time he called me Rick and not Ricky or Saint Ricky.
“Thanks.” I answered uncomfortably.  He jumped out my window without a reply.

Blog Tour and Interview: Amanda Marie

How long have you been writing?
I've been writing for fifteen years about. I began working on my fantasy novel when I was a sophomore in high school and it too me until 2013 to finish it. It went through a lot of changes.

What is your favorite part about being an author?

The best part is hearing happy readers. I know what it's like to read a great book, and that's what I want my readers to feel. Getting those rave reviews, there's nothing better than that.

If you could jump inside the world of a book, what would you be and what would you do?

I would be an elf. I find elves fascintating, that's why I like Lord of the Rings so much. Being a wizard would be pretty cool too.

Could you talk a bit about your publication process?

Well, I spent a long time trying to find a publishing home, and I thought I found one, but it turned into a nightmare. I finally decided I could help others not have to go through the same thing and opened my own publishing house last year. I have a great team of editors and we currently have ten novels and 4 kids books. It's been a nice start in the 9 months we've been open.

Are you working on any other projects?

I'm currently working on the sequel to Torii, but I'm also working on several screenwriting projects as well.

If you could be any person for a day alive, dead, or fictional, who would it be, and what would you do?

President Lincoln, to be a part of ending slavery would be awesome. But being either JK Rowling or Stephanie Meyer would be pretty epic too.

My website is writeramandamarie.com for more info.

Book Excerpt:
By the time that Telemachus was nineteen, he had had enough of Homer’s attempts to
help him to get in touch with his feelings. He was living his loneliness, and he did not see any value in brooding over it as Homer wanted him to do. Consequently, he spent longer times in a state of silence that was loud and clear to Homer.
However, even in silence, Telemachus could not hide his discomfort. During these times, Homer heard Telemachus’ breathing rate change as she asked questions that made him feel ill at ease, and she could smell the sweat that accumulated on his brow. Finally, Homer stopped
following him to the shoreline.
Telemachus had been Homer’s only true friend. He was the only person who did not ever question why she spent so many hours studying, and he never asked her how she could learn so much even though she was blind. She always wanted people to treat her as Homer, and not the blind girl. In receiving the cold shoulder from Telemachus, her wish came true, and it hurt.
By contrast, Telemachus had mixed emotions about not having Homer as a companion. He missed the company, but he also felt relieved that no one forced him to confront his feelings. Homer had been the only one in all of Ithaca to press him on these issues. Even Telemachus’ own mother did not press him. He wondered whether Homer was the only one who could not appreciate that her questions were inappropriate to ask the son of Odysseus, or whether she was
the only one who cared enough to ask the questions that despite his unease and desire not to hear, needed to be asked.

In the first few days after Homer stopped shadowing Telemachus, Homer sulked and Telemachus became even more introverted. But Homer was too determined to make something of herself to allow her rift with Telemachus to bring her down. Accordingly, whereas Telemachus remained focused on waiting for news of his father, Homer threw herself into her interests, and she increased the intensity of her training in the medicinal arts. She also spent her free time, the time that she had previously spent with Telemachus, interviewing travelers and veterans of the Trojan War. Quickly, she became Ithaca’s most worldly citizen, despite never having left its shores.
