Q: I like unique names for characters and am looking forward to coming up with some when I start writing. What's the most unique character name you've come across?
A. As a lover of fantasy, that is a very hard question to answer since oftentimes characters I read about have strange other-worldly names. So I guess the strangest names that I have read about are the ones where the author doesn't even say it because it is so ancient or important or what-have-you. (An example would be the Name of the Ancient Language in the Inheritance Cycle where the author describes how the sound of the name made the characters feel, but never actually wrote down what it was.)
What about you, where you able to come up with anything more specific?

First of, I love your blog name! :D
ReplyDeleteSome unique names are Ponyboy, Sodapop, Legolas (and almost all the other Lord of the Rings characters *lol*).

I agree with you--the genres I think make the most reasonable use of very unique names is fantasy and scifi.

@ smiling_ina I love Legolas! where did you find the names Ponyboy and Sodapop?
ReplyDelete@ Shanan I love how the strange names add to fantasy and scifi, don't you?
Fantasy and sci-fi always have interesting names. Never read the Inheritance cycle, but I understand where you're coming from. This question really is giving interesting answers.
ReplyDeleteEnjoy your week.

I like Fantasy too. They aren't limited to normal sounding names at all.

ReplyDeleteSorry - messed that first message up, lol!
DeleteI've read a few books where there's a character that doesn't have a name. Very creative answer!

I found it really hard to answer this one, so I didn't! I could only think of the names of characters from Harry Potter and The Hunger Games, Katniss in particular.
ReplyDeleteNew to your blog - Turtles are awesome!

@ Nina I recommend you read the series! But be warned, the shortest book has over 500 pages!
ReplyDelete@ Lynsey That's one reason I love fantasy!
@ Pennsylvania Book Chick Thank you!
@ Gina Yeah, it can be hard to remember all the weird names we read about :-)
@ barklesswagmore I like that name, Gytha.
@ Tribute Books Mama Thanks for the hop!
@ Stepping out of the Page I agree, it was one of the harder questions we have had lately!
@ J.B Kantt Yeah, I thought it was interesting, but it really made sense within the story.
@ Priscilla TheGreat Yeah, I was too, hence the vague answer! ;-)
As usual, I am still playing catch up on Saturday. Friday was only enough time to do the twitter and FB follow, and set up the linky on my blog. Sigh! I'm so slow.
ReplyDeleteI liked that name that isn't said, kind of like the name of the Jewish deity. I finally chose a good name from my reading, but you'll have to visit me to find out what it is. http://steepedinbooks.blogspot.com I'm an old follower, just dropping by to say Happy Friday (and Saturday) follow.
I agree, when you say that alot of Sci-Fi and Fantasy have original names that aren't included in a baby name book. If they had very generic, cookie-cutter names it would seem awkward in the stories.

@ Georgia I love the name you picked out! I love all things Celtic but hadn't heard of that story or name before!
ReplyDelete@ Danielle I agree, I find it odd if there are characters like Archfeld and Gormoth and then the man drinking ale in the corner is John!
