Excerpt
“They can treat Amy,” I announced, staring blindly out the window. “It’s experimental stuff, but the doctors are going to do everything they can. It’s not too late.”
Mom breathed a sigh of relief, and I seemed to feel it more than see or hear it.
“Insurance won’t cover it, but I told Dr. Abrams that it wouldn’t be a problem.” I looked back over my shoulder at Mom, confused by the fearful look on her face. Her cropped black hair looked frazzled and worn, while her blue eyes, Amy’s eyes, shifted with terror and panic. “What? What is it?”
“Claire,” she cried, grabbing ahold of my wrist until I sat down in the chair beside her. “We can’t afford that. We don’t have the money.” The tears started up again, and I wanted to slap her for lying to me.
“What are you talking about?” I jerked at her shirtsleeve. “What do you mean we don’t have the money? Daddy left you a fortune!”
“Your father only left me with enough to live on until you girls came of age. That and the house.”
“Came of age?” I crossed my arms over my chest, while she dabbed her eyes with his handkerchief.
“The rest of your father’s wealth is in a trust fund that he set up especially for you girls. He wanted to take care of the two of you, maybe because he knew that I couldn’t.”
Wouldn’t was more like it.
“And why wasn’t I told about this? This mysterious trust fund?”
“Because you can’t access it until you turn twenty-one,” she clarified.
“My birthday’s next week,” I noted, stating aloud what we both already knew.
It was my twenty-first birthday to be exact.
“I know.” Her tears dried immediately, as she reached into her handbag to grab her phone. “I’ll call your father’s attorney. He drew up the contract. I think there were some other stipulations.”
“What do you mean?” My frustration resurfaced, while I watched her dial numbers on the LED touch screen. “What kind of stipulations?”
“In order to access all of the money in the trust…”
“Yeah,” I answered, nudging her on. “I have to be twenty-one. What else?”
“I think you have to be married, too.”
Married? How could that even be legal?
I sat down on the floor and held my head in my hands. Everything had happened too soon, making my world spin out of control. I penned a mental list in my head that summed up the main points of the day.
Amy was sick. And her condition, if not treated, was most likely fatal.
Insurance would not cover the experimental treatments, and Mom didn’t have the money to pay.
Instead, my late father’s wealth had been stowed away in a trust, which I would soon have access to.
As long as I married. As long as I had a husband. And all the while, Amy’s heart could be failing.
Money was the only way to save my sister, and at present, marriage was the only way to get the money.
I needed a husband by next week.
And I didn’t even have a boyfriend.

A Message From the Editor-in-Chief: Piers Anthony originally wrote the stories in this book in 140 characters or less on Twitter over a period of time. I have always been a fan, and so I follow him on Twitter, naturally. I remember when he was writing these Tweets, and it was exciting to get the next sentence sent to my phone and watch the story unfold a little at a time. Imagine my excitement when I was offered these Tweets to publish for the first time in book format. I hope you enjoy them as much as I did.

ONE SPARK WILL RISE. Nina Kane was born to be an exorcist. And since uncovering the horrifying truth—that the war against demons is far from over—seventeen-year-old Nina and her pregnant younger sister, Mellie, have been on the run, incinerating the remains of the demon horde as they go.

In the badlands, Nina, Mellie, and Finn, the fugitive and rogue exorcist who saved her life, find allies in a group of freedom fighters. They also face a new threat: Pandemonia, a city full of demons. But this fresh new hell is the least of Nina’s worries. The well of souls ran dry more than a century ago, drained by the demons secretly living among humans, and without a donor soul, Mellie’s child will die within hours of its birth.

Description...

Sixteen-year-old Nina Kane should be worrying about her immortal soul, but she's too busy trying to actually survive. Her town's population has been decimated by soul-consuming demons, and souls are in short supply. Watching over her younger sister, Mellie, and scraping together food and money are all that matters. The two of them are a family. They gave up on their deadbeat mom a long time ago.

When Nina discovers that Mellie is keeping a secret that threatens their very existence, she'll do anything to protect her. Because in New Temperance, sins are prosecuted as crimes by the brutal Church and its army of black-robed exorcists. And Mellie's sin has put her in serious trouble.

To keep them both alive, Nina will need to trust Finn, a fugitive with deep green eyes who has already saved her life once and who might just be an exorcist. But what kind of exorcist wears a hoodie?

Wanted by the Church and hunted by dark forces, Nina knows she can't survive on her own. She needs Finn and his group of rogue friends just as much as they need her.

Review: Love or Battle

Title: Love or Battle (A Series of Choices #4)
Author: Sharryn Dotson
My Rating: 2 TURTLES: A so-so read. It had some redeeming qualities, but not enough to recommend.
Amazon
*I have given this book in exchange for an honest review

Description:
Lana, Leo, Val and Travis are excitedly planning Val and Travis' upcoming wedding when life rears its ugly head. The guilt is weighing heavy on Travis and he admits to Val that he cheated. Val calls off the wedding, but Travis is busy trying to win her back and investigate his dad's mysterious death. Lana begins damage control to save her best friend's happily ever after while her personal and business relationship with Leo is falling apart. Lana must learn a lesson on forgiveness and hope she can teach it to Val before her wedding to Travis never happens.

Review:
Love or Battle is the 4th, and I believe last, book in The Series of Choices and while I was happy to see many of the loose ends in the series finally tied up, I have to say that it felt overall a bit stilted to me.

What I mean by that is that it felt like the three main conflicts within this book felt like they did not really fit with the conflict built within the rest of the series. Only the conflict between Travis and Val is set up in the last book, and the other two, while given some background context in the last book, could have easily never have happened. The conflict between Leo and Lana felt particularly weird and unbelievable to me. And since the conflict was similar to something we’d already seen I was just a bit bored by it.

I was a weird combination because on the one hand it felt like these conflicts were introduced just so that there could be one more book in the series even though many of the central storylines had already been resolved, but on the other hand Love or Battle felt rushed to me. The conflicts were introduced, but then very quickly solved without the usual twists and turns that were in the previous books.

If you have read all the other books in the series and are attached to the characters then I would recommend this book, since you do get to see things tie up nicely.
