Review: Jewelweed

Title: Jewelweed ARC Edition
Author: David Rhodes
Page Count: 448
Release Date: May 14th 2013
My Rating: 5 TURTLES: AMAZING read. I loved this book, and it's going on my favorites shelf forever! You must get a copy of this book!
Publisher: Milkweed Editions

Description:

With Jewelweed this beloved author returns to the same out-of-the-way community and introduces a cast of characters who must overcome the burdens left by the past. After serving time for a dubious conviction, Blake Bookchester is paroled. As Blake attempts to adjust, he reconnects with Danielle Workhouse, a single mother whose son, Ivan, explores the woods with his precocious friend, August. While Danielle goes to work for Buck and Amy Roebuck in their mansion, Ivan and August befriend Lester Mortal, a recluse who lives in a melon field; a wild boy; and a bat, Milton. These characters — each flawed, deeply human, and ultimately universal — approach the future with a combination of hope and trepidation. Jewelweed offers a vision in which the ordinary becomes mythical, the seemingly mundane transformed into revelatory beauty.

Review:

I got Jewelweed from ALA Midwinter and wasn’t sure what to expect since it is a very different style from what I usually read. The wondrously crafted writing drew me in immediately. David Rhodes is such a phenomenal writer that he creates scenes that could easily be boring and commonplace and turns them into revelatory and pensive reflections on life and society. The multitude of themes and interwoven character lines made Jewelweed a pleasure to read.

Jewelweed is a magical book, and there is so much more to it than it seems originally. There are layers upon layers of complexity to it, switching from narrative to reflection and back again effortlessly. I loved how this book acknowledged the darkness in the world and didn’t shy away from it, but showed the hopefulness of the human spirit underneath all types of suffering that are experienced in a community. It is hard to put into words just how much I loved this book. Don’t get me wrong, I love a good Young Adult Urban Fantasy adventure as much as the next bookworm, but there is something so rich about this book, I feel that I could read it ten more times and notice something new. It reminds me of the type of story that will be read and discussed in schools fifty years from now. Suffice to say I cannot recommend this book enough.

Though for the most part plot-wise there isn’t anything that younger readers couldn’t handle - I’ve read Young Adult books that were much higher on the rating scale – the amount of subtlety in the book probably wouldn’t be easily grasped by anyone younger than high school. I am excited to see how this book is received and if other people will be as moved by it as I was!

GOD BLESS EVERYONE WHO HAS SUPPORTED THE CAUSE TO SAVE SEA TURTLES FROM EXTINCTION!

I've always believed that magic hides in special places. As a child, people would often stare at my bright red hair, which was very, very bright indeed.

Unfortunately, I developed a bad habit of making up rhymes about all of them, and they soon became funny characters. I didn't have much time to think about being different; fanciful lyricisms danced in my head, and no one was safe!
Since then, I've come to believe that storytelling has the power to inspire a deep love of language and learning. Words tripping off the tongue in somersaults that stick to your thoughts like taffy-- those are the things that stay forever in the mind.
I've lived in many special places: on a farm, in a city skyscraper, on a tropical beach, and in the beautiful country of France. Now I live in northern California, between the redwood forests and the sea. Even though I'm an adult, I'm still as silly as ever.
Many nice words have been used to describe my books, such as fun, engaging, delightful, and whimsical. Some folks say that I deliver timeless messages of love for kids and parents to share again and again; this makes me very happy. I hope that you'll enjoy my stories, too. Captivating children with language is something that I believe in, and I strive to live my life with this always.

Release Announcement!

WORLD WEAVER PRESS
ANNOUNCES NEW YA NOVEL
“H E I R  T O  T H E  L A M P”
FIRST IN THE “GENIE CHRONICLES”
BY MICHELLE LOWERY COMBS

DIGITAL AND TRADE PAPERBACK EDITION AVAILABLE
TUESDAY, JULY 16, 2013

Chicago, IL (May 8, 2013 World Weaver Press (Eileen Wiedbrauk, Editor-in-Chief) has announced Heir to the Lamp  by Michelle Lowery Combs, a new YA novel and first in the “Genie Chronicles” will be released in trade paperback and ebook on Tuesday, July 16, 2013.

Wiedbrauk commented, “Heir to the Lamp is smart and fun. At the younger end of YA fiction, it’s great to watch the main character, Ginn, explore her powers as a djinn as she struggles to find herself as a young woman.”

A family secret, a mysterious lamp, a dangerous Order with the mad desire to possess both. Ginn used to think she knew all there was to know about how she became adopted by parents whose #1 priority is to embarrass her with public displays of affection, but that changes when a single wish starts a never-ending parade of weirdness marching through her door the day she turns thirteen. Gifted with a mysterious lamp and the missing pieces from her adoption story, Ginn tries to discover who…or what…she really is. That should be strange enough, but to top it off Ginn’s being hunted by the Order of the Grimoire, a secret society who’ll stop at nothing to harness the power of a real genie. Ginn struggles to stay one step ahead of the Grimms with the help of Rashmere, Guardian of the lamp and the most loyal friend a girl never knew she had. The Grimms are being helped, too--but by whom? As much as she doesn’t want to, Ginn’s beginning to question the motives of her long-time crush Caleb Scott and his connection to her newest, most dangerous enemy.

Heir to the Lamp will be available in trade paperback and ebook viaamazon.combarnesandnoble.comkobo.com, and other online retailers. You can also find Heir to the Lamp on Goodreads.

Natasha Roth and her older brother, Arthur, have removed the magical darkness that had fallen over the land of Logres.

But all actions have consequences.

Blog Tour: Suddenly Royal

I am so excited to be a part of the Suddenly Royal blog tour! I love Nichole Chase and am so glad she is guest posting here today! (#2 and #3 are my favorites!)

My Top 5 Swoon Worthy Male Characters

Who hasn’t read a book where a character makes you swoon? Oh, you know what I mean. Your heart beat picks up a little every time he comes onto the page. You envision yourself as the leading lady and wish someone would kiss you just the same way. Or look deep into your eyes while struggling to express his undying love? Boy, have I found some of those characters throughout my years of voracious reading. And today, I’m going to share my top five picks.

#5 Jake Kelly from Double Clutch by Liz Reinhardt.
Jake is a reformed bad boy, intent on doing things right. He’s thoughtful, sweet, and oh, so deliciously intense! Jake will have you swooning every time he opens his mouth. There’s something honest and wholesome about his character, even though he’s not always been this good. Knowing that he’s trying to do it right, even though he wants to do it all wrong (as in right now!), makes him that much more tempting.

#4 Dr. Giovanni Vecchio from A Hidden Fire, The Elemental Series #1 by Elizabeth Hunter.
Gio, a sexy Italian with a love for old books. He speaks more languages than embassy diplomats, all while kicking ass, looking sexy, and shooting smoldering looks. There isn’t anything sexier than a man with iron-clad self-control, losing it for me. Ahem, I mean the heroine of the book.

#3 Jace from The City of Bones, The Mortal Instruments #1 by Cassandra Clare.
Oh, Jace. All of your bad boy goodness, wrapped with the silent yearning to be loved. It’s just too much for me to resist. Like Clary, I want to fix you, while enjoying your witty barbs and sarcasm.

#2 Fitzwillam Darcy, Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen.
Oh, you prideful, arrogant man! How you played with my emotions during the book. Your lingering glances and thoughtful words, pulled at my heart. Your witty repertoire and intelligent conversation woo’d my brain. But your ability to utter a simple sentence with such sincerity won me all completely. Call me Mrs. Darcy any day. I’m putty in your hands.

#1 Carwyn ap Bryn from Building with Ashes, an Elemental World novel by Elizabeth Hunter
Carwyn, I claimed you as mine the moment you walked onto the page in A Hidden Fire. A sexy redheaded vampire with a killer sense of humor and a family man to boot—I was hooked. I’ll fight anyone that dares try to claim you. I love your fondness for bright, Hawaiian shirts, and I don’t even care that you watch pro-wrestling. There’s nothing sexier than your Irish accent and sense of humor. *sigh* *swoon* *sigh

SUDDENLY ROYAL Synopsis:
Samantha Rousseau is used to getting her hands dirty. Working toward a master’s degree in wildlife biology while helping take care of her sick father, she has no time for celebrity gossip, designer clothes, or lazy vacations. So when a duchess from the small country of Lilaria invites her to dinner, Samantha assumes it’s to discuss a donation for the program. The truth will change the course of her life in ways she never dreamed.

Alex D’Lynsal is trying to keep his name clean. As crown prince of Lilaria, he’s had his share of scandalous headlines, but the latest pictures have sent him packing to America and forced him to swear off women—especially women in the public eye. That is, until he meets Samantha Rousseau. She’s stubborn, feisty, and incredibly sexy. Not to mention heiress to an estate in his country, which makes her everyone’s front-page news.

While Sam tries to navigate the new world of politics and wealth, she will also have to dodge her growing feelings for Alex. Giving in to them means more than just falling in love; it would mean accepting the weight of an entire country on her shoulders.

Author Bio:
Nichole Chase is a daydreamer. No, really, just ask any of the math teachers that had the misfortune of seeing her name appear on their class schedule.
For years she has had story lines and characters begging for attention, but she resolutely pushed them aside to focus on more normal (read, boring) jobs.
Well, no longer! She is currently heeding the voices in her head and frantically writing their stories. Ms. Chase is the author of the Dark Betrayal Trilogy, Flukes, and Suddenly Royal (including several short stories).
Nichole resides in South Georgia with her husband, energetic daughter, dog, tortoise, and two cats. When not devouring novels by the dozens, you may find her writing, painting, crafting, or chasing her daughter around the house while making monster noises.
