FAIRMIST
is about a society that kills children because they have to. If they
don’t, demonic slinks will slaughter everyone. So they hide their fear, dance
at their masquerade balls, and pretend that those sacrificed are blessed.
Seventeen-year-old
Grei cannot live on another’s sacrifice. He asks the forbidden question: If the
slinks could kill them all, why take just one a month?
The
leaders of the empire want to silence Grei. The slinks want to kill him. And
the girl he has loved since childhood says she can guide him.
Grei
plunges into an adventure that will force him to become one of the killers he
despises. Using magic set in place centuries ago, Grei can trigger a spell and
send all the slinks back to their fiery dimension. All he has to do is
sacrifice one last person: the girl he loves.
About the Author:
Todd was born in
Culver City, California, the second son of a sign
painter
and a New Age
mom. His father was an amazingly talented artist with a Herculean
work ethic, and his mother was magic. She taught him that his perspective
changes the world, which is why he writes stories about heroes and hope.
A true Gen Xer,
Todd navigated his parents’ divorce when he was fourteen, leaping into a
series of adventures that shaped his life. He utilized his mother’s
unreasonable optimism to avert his gaze from his own poverty and grab life
by the heart. Jumping from job to job, Todd hitchhiked across the
country and visited most of the 50 states. He has traveled to Mexico,
Europe, the Caribbean, and Indonesia. He has been a Price Club
cashier in Long Beach, a video arcade attendant in Durango, and
an investment banking Powerpoint operator in New York City. He has waited
tables in Colorado Springs, hung safety cables for crack-inspection teams
inside oil tankers in Portland, and helped raise millions of dollars for
diabetes nonprofits in Denver.
Todd followed his love
affairs, sketching new people and new places with pencil and pad, all the
while writing fantasy stories. While attending The Colorado College
in 1993, Todd published his first two short stories in TSR's Dragon-
lance anthologies. In 1997, he began writing with Giles Carwyn,
published another couple of short stories and won the New York Books for
the Teen Age award forTrue
Love (Or the Many Brides of Prince Charming).
In 2006, Todd and Giles wrote HEIR OF AUTUMN under HarperCollins’ Eos
imprint and followed with MISTRESS OF WINTER and QUEEN OF OBLIVION. The writing
team finished the Heartstone Trilogy in 2008 and moved on to solo
projects.
Todd's greatest
accomplishments are his children, his marriage and his novels. He
is passionate about family, friends, stories, adventure, Colorado, and his
goal is to inspire people with his mother’s optimism. He
writes to enchant and delight and to capture those moments where,
just for a second, he feels like a hero.
Todd Fahnestock is the best-selling author of HEIR
OF AUTUMN, MISTRESS OF WINTER and QUEEN OF OBLIVION, published by
Eos/HarperCollins. His middle grade novel, THE WISHING WORLD, will be released
by Tor Books in 2016. FAIRMIST, published in February 2015, is Todd’s
first self-published work.
