Follow Friday

Q. Have you ever wanted a villain to win at the end of a story? If so, which one?

A. Wow that's a tough one, but so far I'm pretty sure the answer is no. There are nuanced characters who aren't all bad who I think were treated too harshly, but that's not really the question. I imagine I would start rooting for a villain if the main character REALLY bugged me to the point where I didn't care anymore. But I think this question is really hard because characters aren't black and white, so it isn't always clear who is 'good and who is 'bad'.

I would love to hear some specific answers since I am drawing a blank on any of my own! Please don't be shy to share a link!

  6. I agree that carefully nuanced villains can be interesting, but I never really "rooted" for any that I can think of.

I could only think of one, which was the Frankenstein monster. His back story was just extremely sad.

  13. It's a hard question this week. To be honest, if you start rooting for the villain because the main character is annoying you, then I don't think it is a book worth finishing!
I did think of one villain who people root for!

  15. Good answer! I have met some characters that probably should have been killed, but you are right, no one is black or white.

  17. Great answer! I agree with you on not knowing who is good and who is bad all the time. Every character has bad and good qualities. That's what makes them so interesting.

  19. Thanks for stopping by at my blog! I always prefer novels whose characters are 'grey' rather than 'black and white': it's one of the reasons I love ASoIaF so much. :) Following.
