Blog Tour Stop: Bad Monsters

Introducing – Dr. Booker and Devonne Booker

In Clinton D. Harding's debut novel "Our Monsters", Jon Graves and his friends escaped their parents and the military, leaving behind the only home they'd ever known, the small town of Carpenter. But their freedom is short lived as they find themselves in more danger than before they left Carpenter.
"Bad Monsters"—the second book The Our Monsters Chronicles, released March 2014—picked up where its prequel ended. Jon and his friends are on the run and hunted and by General Mauser and his military dogs. Jon can practically feel them breathing down his neck, as the jaws of the military dogs snapping at his heels.
Blood is spilled, friendly and not, and now Jon must answer his friends' questions sooner than later, or risk one of those friends dying. He's just not sure he's the person to be deciding their fates or if he, Alice, and George are fully prepared to walk away from their normal lives.
A farm in northern California may serve as salvation to this scared, but brave, group of teenagers. However, can they trust the inhabitants they find there, who themselves have a history with Carpenter? If Jon can talk his way past the shotgun in his face, he might just discover what he and his friends need; answers about the history of Carpenter, the hybrids, the powers the teens borrow from their hybrids and who are the true monsters. In all this confusion and danger, Jon may also find a young woman who can help heal the wounds left by Mikaila when she left him and the group.
Pick up "Bad Monsters", the second installment in The Our Monsters Chronicles, is now available and can be found in e-book and paperback form at major online retailers: Amazon | Barnes & Noble | Smashwords.

"Bad Monsters" introduces many new characters. Enemies to harry the teenagers and their hybrids toward trouble. Allies to provide sanctuary and answers.
Two new characters are a father and his daughter, Dr. Tobin Booker and Devonne Booker. When one of the teenagers' and hybrids' number is mortally injured during a skirmish with the Carpenter Army unit hunting them, the group has no choice but to look up an old colleague of Dr. Rush's to ask for medical aid. They get more than they bargain for when they arrive at the Booker Farm and veterinary clinic and find themselves staring down the barrel of a shotgun.
Is Dr. Booker friend or foe? Jon, George, and Alice will need to decide if they can trust the veterinarian. The allure of a quiet place to rest and the attention of the veterinarian's daughter Devonne—a smart, witty, snarky teenager—will cloud Jon's judgment and threaten to misdirect his and his friends' course.
Jon had two women in his life during the events of the first book "Our Monsters". Mikaila was the girl-next-door. She was the heart of the misfit group until her departure at the end of the book. A best friend to Jon. Cute. Gentle. Nurturing. Jon could never see her as anything more than a confidant, someone to watch his favorite movies with, to laugh, and to joke. Mikaila desired a relationship with Jon but he could never let go of her as his best friend, despite the strange feelings he had when he saw her go out on a date with another classmate. Then there was Alice. The one-night-in-heaven desire of every high school boy. Every boy's not-so-secret wet dream. So high on the trophy self, Jon would never think of reaching for Alice. Seductive. Sassy. Popular. Sharp tongued. Queen of high school. Broken. (More on Alice in another article.)
Devonne is somewhere between Mikaila and Alice. She is beautiful. Quick witted. Fearless. And a female nerd. While Mikaila would challenge Alice's superior attitude, trying to make peace while chiding her, Devonne is tough as nails and will challenge Alice with witticism and a quick tongue. She is new and exciting to Jon, someone who shares no backstory with him, and she is the first girl who will show Jon outward affection rather than dance around their friendship. Her presence will irritate Alice and rub her the wrong way. Drama and conflict... yes!
Her father is another story. While Devonne will come into conflict with Alice over the position as queen bee, her father and Jon will have a hard time trusting each other. Jon and his friends may bring a storm to the Booker farm. And the veterinarian and his daughter are running from their own ghosts. Visitors are not what Booker is looking for or wants. He has his secrets he's running from too. Secrets that will affect the futures of Jon, his friends, and the hybrids. Booker is also an adult, a parent, and adults are hard for Jon and his friends to trust. Their own parents kept secrets from them, why should they trust this man? Booker doesn't like Jon either, especially when his daughter is making googly eyes at the teenager.
Jon has many decisions to make in "Bad Monsters". New characters—friends or foes?—only add to the complexity of his options. Believe me, there are other new characters besides the Bookers too. Those that would spare but use the teenagers and hybrids and those who would capture them. Jon better decide which are which soon.
Who are these new characters? You've briefly met the Bookers, read "Bad Monsters" for additional introductions.

Blog Tour: The Forest's Heir

Guest Post:
Writing is something I’ve always wanted to do. People say I’m good at writing drama and angst. They say I can break your heart with my words. I don’t know about all that, but I know that there’s one thing that’s hard for me… it’s so hard for me to write mystery. Mostly because I give everything away.

I love reading mysteries, especially murder mysteries like those that inspired the television show Bones. I’ve always wanted to be able to write a story that has a mystery embedded into the entire story and not give it away until the very end of the story. I want to be that kind of writer.

So I sat down and started thinking about my favorite young adult mysteries. Why did I like them so much, and which ones topped the list? So here are my top five favorite young adult mysteries.
1.The Name of the Star by Maureen Johnson
2. The Lovely Bones by Alice Sebold
3. Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children by Ransom Riggs
4. Changeling by Philippa Gregory
5. Grave Mercy by Robin LaFevers
I think what draws me so much about these kinds of stories is that they draw you in at the beginning and don’t let go until the end. They drop little clues throughout the story to let you figure out what’s going on, but they never give you the big picture until it’s time for the big reveal. There are a few close calls and a little bit of misdirection, but the writers NEVER give it away.

I wish I could do that.

Maybe that will be my next project. I’ll write a mystery. Just as soon as I finish the third Elemental Royals novel.

It might take a while though. I like to give away too much.

Self-Publishing is the Future

Two separate small publishers offered me contracts to publish The Convenience of Lies. I turned both of them down because I didn’t like the terms they were offering. For both contracts I would receive minimal royalties (less than $0.25/copy sold), would be required to do all of my own publicity, and I would have to sign away the rights to my book. One publisher even required me to pay my own editor! At that point, it seemed like all the publishers were really providing for me was cover art and prestige, and for a very high price.

To be honest, I didn’t want to sell myself out like this. The Convenience of Lies is a project I started 10 years ago and I have truly invested my heart, time, money, and sole. While I was shopping my book around the traditional publishing world, it fell into the hands of a editorial reviewer, who gave me a glowing review of my work. Not only that, but my mom is a high school English teacher and she’s had boys in her class who don’t like to read complete it in one night, by choice. I was not about to let a traditional publisher take advantage of my creation.

At the same time as I was querying publishers, I was also researching self-publishing. I discovered that I could self-publish through Amazon’s CreateSpace and receive royalties of over $5.00/copy, which is more than a 20x increase from traditional publishing. Also, CreateSpace has a cover creator tool that I could use to generate the cover, and has a print on demand option. Meaning, when someone orders my book from Amazon, CreateSpace prints it, takes their cut of the profit, and sends me the royalties. There is no up-front cost for either party.

Not only is self-publishing arguably a better business decision, due to the internet it is now the choice of the future. We are in an era where we don’t need a publisher to reach our audience. The internet has cut out the middle man and made it so that artists can reach their audience directly. This applies not only to publishing your book, but also to promoting your book. Between tumblr, twitter, facebook, reddit, and the blogosphere, you can reach out directly to readers as I am doing now. Keep in mind that many traditional publishers require authors to do this promotional work. So, let me ask you, what is that traditional publisher really doing for its authors?

As ironic as it is for me to say as an author, the world of traditional publishing is ending. Artists can now affordably create professional works and also reach their audience as never before. Not only that (and a real cincher) the author can also keep possession of the rights to their works through self-publishing. The world of traditional publishing is simply taking too much from authors and not giving them enough in return. The internet has cut out the middle man with the connections and has given you direct access to those connections. As they say, it is simply up to you to seize this opportunity.

She saw
red. Seeping into the crystal clear water it spread, bleeding and merging as
the ripples around her pushed it closer towards her feet. The deep crimson only
grew darker as it surrounded her.

She could
feel her breathing quicken, coming in short, sharp rasps as she started to
panic. Her chest constricted, an unbearable pressure tightening like a boa
constrictor refusing to release her from its clutches. Her throat felt dry, her
increased breathing doing nothing to help the situation as she forced herself
to swallow in the hope of dislodging the lump that had formed there.

This isn’t
happening. This isn’t real. I came here to escape this,
 she told herself repeatedly
as she laid there, her turquoise bikini embellished with golden sequins shining
in the sun as her back tanned slowly. Bringing up an arm to adjust her
chestnut-brown hair that was dangling in the water, she tried to pull away
before the colour reached her and tainted the beautiful locks. The damage done
would be irreparable if it touched her.

Moving it
just in time, she threw it over her shoulder so it rested between her shoulder
blades, the damp tips feeling nice as they cooled her back by trailing droplets
of water down either side. She tried not to flinch as her gaze returned to the
bloodied water that lapped at the li-lo beneath her chin. With every wave it
seemed to grow closer, making its way further up the yellow plastic to try and
touch her. The tapping that was normally so soothing tormented her now, like a
crowd clapping and cheering her sanity on as it fled for safety.

Rather
than listen to the logical side of her brain, her body had other ideas.
Shuffling back, she put a bigger distance between her face and the abnormal
pool beneath her. As her toes dipped into the cool water behind her though, she
flinched, automatically drawing herself up so that no part of her body was near
the edge. No matter how disgusted she was, she couldn’t stop staring; her eyes
were hypnotised by the gentle movements that swirled the colour into the water
even more. The red had become so thick that not one tile beneath the surface
was visible.

The more
she stared, the more she remembered.

The more
she remembered, the more she was pulled into her memory.

It might
not have been real at that moment in time, but it had been, and Jenna was once
again pulled into the unbearable memory.

Excerpt:
AJ sensed him there, standing wordlessly some feet in the distance, just like she always recognized his presence when he lingered near. She absorbed the comfort and happiness he brought her – not that she’d admit that out loud – before sighing and speaking. “It’s called making a bed, Julius. It’s pretty commonplace.”
He didn’t push away from the doorframe, instead leaning further against it while he continued to observe her. “Sweetheart, nothing’s commonplace when you do it.”
Hearing the grin and affection in his voice, she smiled, peeking at him over her shoulder. “Is that a compliment or an insult?”
He gazed upward to stare at the ceiling with a thoughtful expression, then returned his attention to her, his shrug carefree. “Both.”
She smirked. “Sweet talker.”
“Odd ball.” He finally moved from the threshold, unhurriedly advancing toward her. “You know, most people make their beds in the morning. Not ten o’clock at night.”
She snorted. “Yeah. I’m gonna make my bed as soon as I roll out of it at six AM. I wouldn’t be making it now if I didn’t have to wrestle the sheet back on four times a night.” Finally setting her pillow in its position, she turned to him with an unashamed grin.
He chuckled, his adoration plain, and brushed a lock of hair from her face. “You’re one of a kind, you know that?”
“Compliment or insult?” she teased again.
“Compliment.” He smiled, cupping her cheek. “Definitely a compliment.”
“Sweet talker,” she repeated, standing on her tiptoes to press a kiss to his lips. Wrapping her arms around his neck, his circling her waist, she dove into the moment, reveling in the wonderful sensations only Julius incited. Safety. Warmth. Passion. So many more she couldn’t quite put a name to, the combination too heady and consuming to adequately decipher. It was simply a Julius effect, and its wonder had no equal in her life. Gradually breaking away, she knowingly lifted an eyebrow. “You didn’t come here just to make fun of me over my bed-making habits.”
“Maybe I came up here just to kiss you.”
“If that were the case, dear Julius, you wouldn’t have waited until I kissed you.”
Narrowing his eyes, he barely restrained his smirk at her forwardness and how well she’d grown to understand him in their time together. “You have a point.” He stepped back from her embrace, grasping her hand in his. “Come on. We have a mission.”
“A mission?” Her brow furrowed, though she made no move to retrieve her palm from his, following him in confusion as he neared the hallway. “At ten o’clock at night?”
“I believe we already covered the time in this conversation, AJ.” He made a clucking noise with his tongue, shaking his head in mock disappointment. “You really need to keep up with matters a bit more.”
She glared at the back of his head, lips thinning despite her vexing boyfriend’s inability to see her from his location. Realizing the futility of her frustrated efforts, she clenched the fingers he clutched, smiling in accomplishment at his grunt of discomfort. “Yeah, we covered it, but in household chore way. Not in a mission way. What could we possibly have to do this late at night?”
He sent her an amused glance – one she deemed condescending, particularly after the physical hint of her annoyance  – while tugging her through the doorway. “You do realize it isn’t ten o’clock everywhere, right?”
“Of course I realize that! I’m not a moron!”
“I never said you were…”
She growled, steeling her feet against the floor and prying her hand from his. “You didn’t have to. Your little grin said it all for you.”
His stare revealed sincere bewilderment – maybe a speck of frustration as well – and his arm dropped to his side. “So let me get this straight. You’re angry at me… because I smiled at you?”
Her eyes widened in fury, one finger raising to point at his chest while her left fist braced against her hip. “Don’t try to turn this around like I’m crazy!”
He scrunched his forehead, gaze traveling up and down her form while he held his hands out, as if silently offering his evidence.
She groaned, unhappy, turning away from him to rein in her irritation. For several seconds, she simply scanned her room, livid exhale after livid exhale falling from her lips, but the attempts did little to calm her turmoil, Julius actually flinching when her focus again landed on him. “It’s the grin you used. It’s the same one that was on your face when you drove into New Mexico, and I was surprised the facility was stationed here. Like I’m the dumbest person in the world and your number one source of entertainment.”
Instantly, his expression softened. “You can’t possibly think that I think that way?”
She just glared at him.
“Look, I’m not gonna lie.” He approached her, smiling tenderly. “You do amuse me, but not because I think you’re stupid. You’re… animated. And quirky. But not stupid. And I get it’s late, and no matter what time zone we’re entering, it’s ten o’clock here and we’re handing over sleeping hours, but Nicholai insists we need to go now.”
She kept pinched eyes on him, but her posture loosened a bit.
He laughed, reaching for her hand once more. “See? Animated. I can pretty much watch the wheels in your head turn.”
“Does that make you my mental stalker, too?”
Processing the playful edge of her words, he kissed her knuckles and led her into the hall. “Trust me, sweetheart. I have no desire to wander through your mind. I can’t imagine all the weird things I’d encounter.”
She tilted her head to the side, smiling. “Compliment or insult?”
Smirking over his shoulder, he caught her eyes with his. “Insult.”
